Severe Disability Compensation: Extra Benefits For The Severely Disabled
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has recognized the need to provide additional compensation for veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities. Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is a monthly benefit payable in addition to the basic scheduled compensation rate. The amount depends on the nature and severity of the disability.

Conditions for SMC Benefits
The VA provides SMC benefits to vets whose service-connected injuries include:
- Loss of hand or foot, or loss of use of these extremities
- Immobility of a joint or paralysis
- Blindness in one eye that allows only for light perception
- Loss or loss of use of a reproductive organ
- Loss or loss of use of both buttocks
- Deafness in both ears
- Loss of ability to speak
- Loss of tissue from one or both breasts from mastectomy or radiation treatment
When a veteran is found to have more than one of these service-connected disabilities, higher levels of SMC will be awarded for specific combinations of disabilities. Similarly, a veteran who has become a paraplegic because of service-connected injuries and has complete loss of bowel or bladder control will be entitled to a very high level of SMC. SMC benefits are also available to those veterans who are housebound or in need of regular aid and attendance as a result of their service-connected disabilities.
